Hydraulic and Environmental Engineering Services for Sustainable Coastal Development

by Adam Madeeh (Coastal Engineer) - 4 years ago

Climate change is a cross-cutting development issue and will affect every aspect of the Maldivian way of life and livelihood. The small size and low-lying nature of the Maldivian islands make the island nation system highly vulnerable and sensitive to climate change impacts. As such, the loss of land due to beach erosion is one of the major threats we face.

The severity and frequency of observed erosion and flooding incidents have increased over the last couple of years. The adaptation measures to mitigate erosion in the islands, due to lack of planning and poor design have led to increased maladaptation countrywide. Through understanding environmental processes and using innovative tools we can reduce the impact of such measures, provide cost-effective designs and deliver environmentally, socially and economically sustainable solutions

Our approach

Our philosophy is to work with nature to ensure the sustainability of coastal development. We recognize that reef island shorelines are continually adjusting to changes in wave processes, nearshore current and sediments and that coastal management decision making needs to factor in natural processes to be successful.

Our solution

We develop a clear understanding of natural, hydraulic, and coastal processes by conducting surveying and monitoring studies, carrying out numerical modelling with state of art software tools such as Delft3D and XBeach. We provide a combination of know-how and tools to apply this understanding to deliver optimal engineering designs. Furthermore, we also identify the risks associated with climate change and develop adaptive measures, thereby ensuring the long-term sustainability of coastal developments. Lastly, we can aid in identifying the adverse impacts of the development project on the coastal environment as early as possible.
